On Thursday Morning, December 19, 2024, Eng./Abdulrab Al-Khulaqi, Deputy Chairman of YGAPC, and several senior officials of the corporation met with maritime expert Kevin O'Connell to discuss his mission assigned by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to develop a maritime governance strategy for Yemen.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Deputy Chairman welcomed the Irish expert and expressed his appreciation for the visit, which aims to closely examine the port's current and future needs and prioritize essential projects, particularly in enhancing maritime awareness across economic, security, and safety aspects within the port and Yemen as a whole.
The meeting began with the expert explaining the details of his mission. Following this, Mr. Ahmed Muthana Al-Ammari, General Manager of Planning, Marketing, and Information, presented a comprehensive overview of the port's requirements for rehabilitating both the infrastructure and superstructure. The presentation highlighted the facilities damaged during the war and assets that have deteriorated over time and now require replacement.
Eng. Saleh Jaber then delivered another presentation outlining key projects under the General Department of Technical and Engineering Affairs. Among the most critical were the rehabilitation of the port's main slipway and the marine maintenance workshop.
Capt. /Taha Wagdi provided a presentation on the marine operations department's functions and the necessary enhancements to its capabilities to ensure safe and efficient vessel berthing and departure operations.
The meeting finished with Mr. Mohsen Al-Hattas, Advisor of the Executive Chairman of YGAPC for Berths and Yards affairs, expressing his thanks for the organization's efforts in rehabilitating the large warehouses at Ma'alla Port through a Japanese grant. He also emphasized additional requirements the corporation hopes to achieve, including the implementation of the master plan for Ma'alla Port developed by a Dutch consultancy firm with program funding.
After the meeting, the expert, accompanied by the Deputy Chairman, visited the technical workshop and the control building, followed by a boat trip around the port. The visit also included the presence of Mr. Walid Baharon, UNDP Program Specialist.
